VW Passat Variant By using a modified 3c. As the interface between human brain and control systems in cars, the team system connection (interface) made Emotiv, which is EOPC. The program is called by the team – led professor Raul Rojas – as application “BrainDriver”. The objective test project called “Brain Power”.
The team uses biolektrik signals mounted on the head “driver” through 16 sensors electroencephagraphy (EEG), neuroheadset that record brain activity. EEG was made by the company Emotiv of San-Francisco, for playing on with an electronic brain commands.
After sitting behind the wheel, the driver made several “mental exercise”, learn to move the virtual objects with the mind. Each movement is connected to a different form of brain activity with the command, turn left, turn right, step on the gas and so forth. Researchers then enter this command to WVPassat equipped with computer commands the drive by wire.
In the first test, the car running alone toward the crossroads. At a certain point, people who are in it just use your mind to order the turn. While in the second test – conducted in the old Berlin Tempelhof airport – the driver controls the steering wheel continuously, the gas pedal and brake through the mind. The result, still be a delay between the mental and actual vehicle reaction.
Video of this research has been published on the internet. It is said, the study “Brain Driver” is merely trial and not yet ready for use on the highway. But later, when ready, will improve people’s ability to drive a car, especially when equipped with its own drive system.
